Kau-Puê Art Associate
Stone Carving Works in Shatao Temple of Tainan +
“Four Saints” by Li-shui Pan

Originating from an international contemporary art exhibition, which is going to be held in Soulangh Cultural Park at the beginning of 2017, Kau-Puê Art Associate starts with the theme “Art Associate.” Following the theme proposed by the curator, members of Art Commons Tainan (ACT) visited various temples in 2015. The book covers are their rubbing works of the stone carvings of the four saints in Shatao Temple, and the back covers are the images of the bishop wood and pomegranate wood carvings on the edge of the offering table in Fahua Temple. With the four titles “Gods of Near Future,” “Earth.Belief.Marginal Art,” “Ancestral Spirits Check-in: Enchanting/Marginal Talks” and “Ecstatic Bodies,” Kau-Puê Art Associate is today’s indirect response to Minzoku Taiwan in 1941. From the “Minzoku” (ethnic in Japanese) researches and re-presentation at the time, to contemporary “folk arts,” both of the publications discuss the re-creation of visual culture, art preservation and restoration, exhibition systems, archive displaying and contemporary languages of artistic movements. Kau-Puê Art Associate aims to present the above five aspects, using colors and layouts of folk arts, along with emotional thinking of younger artists, to start conversations for friendship.

At the beginning of April, 2015, Shatao Temple, an old temple in a street near Ximan Road, West Central District, Tainan City, was having a restoration work, and members of Arts Commons Tainan happened to pass by the temple. After confirming, we were sure the forty-nine stone carving works on the walls of the temple were made when the temple was renewed thirty-seven years ago. At that time, Li-shui Pan, a traditional artist from Tainan, directly drew his designs on stone plates, and later these plates were carved by Hong-yi Shi, a stone carver. Among sixty stone carving works, four pieces of “Four Saints” were the most impressive ones. The dynamic images of four saints with bare foots, snakes and their weapons to smite devils reflect Li-shui Pan’s drawing techniques of girdle wrinkles and flying decorations in his other door god paintings. Compared with drawn or wooden four saint works in other temples, Pan’s pieces of the four saints present lively lines spread out to make those flying saints look vivid and energetic here. After Arts Commons Tainan’s efforts of making rubbing works of them, Shatao Temple also provided nine stone carving works removed from the temple for Arts Commons Tainan. Those nine pieces were restored with professional techniques by Mirr Lo and artist Wei-cheng Tu, and their rubbing works were printed in the first issue of Kau-Puê Art Associate in honor of this beautiful coincidence.
