Tsu-chi Temple in Dajia, Rende

Located in Dajia Village, Rende District, Tainan, Tsu-chi Temple worships Baosheng Dadi, the Chinese god of medicine, Second Emperor, and Third Emperor, whose family names are Wu, Xu, and Sun. In 1661, the 15th year of the reign of King Yongli in the Ming Dynasty, when ZHENG Chenggong recovered Taiwan, our ancestor WU Bi-Chuan escorted the golden statue to cross the sea from Shen-qing Village, Xiamen. Sailing along Erren River, he landed at Daku, Dajia Village. It was time when plague struck and people suffered. Since Wu had no wife, he found it hard to fully dedicate to worshipping, and thus he transferred the duty to XU Biao and finally to HSU Chin-Ji. After the plague died out, villagers felt grateful for the omnipresent power of Baosheng Dadi. Therefore, Hsu raised funds for a Baosheng Dadi temple, which was built in 1714, the 53th year of the reign of Kangxi Emperor in the Qing Dynasty.
Later in the Pacific War, Dajia Village miraculously remained intact in the dire situation even though it was located just beside the north of Tainan Airport. In 1945, feeling grateful to be protected by Baosheng Dadi, the villagers raised money to rebuild the temple even though they were in financial straits after war. The construction was completed in October, and a celebrating offering ritual was held to pray for peace. The temple underwent expansions and repairs in 1949, 1951, and 1967. In 1969, CHEN Shou-Yi was commissioned to paint for the whole temple—the door gods in the exhibition room were painted then.
In 1998, an oracle was given, requiring to rebuild the temple by 2003. The committee for rebuilding summoned the help of many, inviting CHEN Chiu-Shan to paint for the temple. They built a metal hut in front of the temple for Chen to live, and Chen started painting while the temple was still under construction. After the temple was built, Chen kept painting for nine more years. He lived in the metal hut for a total of 13 years, finishing 106 paintings.
