紐約COPE NYC與蕭壠國際藝術村合作成果展《聖母的水漣漪》

◢展覽介紹
《聖母的水漣漪》(The Heavenly Princesses and the Bam Ripple)
位於美國的文化組織COPE NYC(促進平等的創意機會)，邀請Michela Martello(米凱拉•馬特洛)代表COPE NYC參加蕭壠文化園區舉辦的2022年藝術家進駐交流活動。今年COPE NYC提出的議題是「水」在臺灣，不管是在生活方式、文化傳統及永續性的生態環境當中的重要性。Martello以「媽袓」及不同宗教的聖母等受人尊敬的海神為主題作畫。據傳說，「媽袓」從海上風暴中拯救了漁民，並將他們帶到安全的地方。Martello也在圖像中將多位聖母，包括觀世音菩薩、綠度母及聖母瑪莉亞錯置呈現，進行一種超越宗教圖像，而純粹精神能量的探索，試圖激勵我們感受更深層的自我，並更專注於我們精神中與水的連結。Martello的畫懸掛於橢圓形空間上，中央有一座臺灣形狀的水池，島嶼變成了水，而島的周圍則佈滿了守護神靈。水成為萬物流動的象徵，一種淨化的形式，滋養了大地、生命和再生的機會。Michela Martello在這項作品中更她曾獲獎過的創作手法，運用了隨手可得的布襯及水管進行創作。
◢藝術家簡介：
米凱拉•馬特洛 (Michela Martello)
擅於透過象徵主義創作出充滿人性又有感染力的作品，融合傳統和當代元素，以不同的技法、媒材、主題、文化，創作出打破語言隔閡的美學、融合不同時代、跨越文化疆界的藝術作品。其出生於義大利的格羅塞托，曾於歐洲設計學院攻讀插圖設計，並出版逾30本書，米凱拉搬到紐約後創作重心轉移為繪畫。
◢策展人簡介：
薇妲·薩巴紀 (Vida Sabbaghi )
文化製作人薇妲･薩巴紀畢業於紐約普瑞特藝術學院，主修藝術與設計，她是COPE NYC的創辦人暨設計總監。COPE NYC積極與當地及國內外的藝術組織合作，鼓勵不同族群互相交流想法與創意。與蕭壠的合作計畫支持著COPE NYC的目標，即為透過創意發想與實踐形塑跨文化關係。

◢About the exhibition- The Heavenly Princesses and the Bam Ripple
COPE NYC (Creative Opportunities Promoting Equality New York City), the cultural organization based in the United States, invited Michela Martello at the 2022 Artist in Residence Exchange at Siao-Long Cultural Park. This year, COPE NYC’s theme is the importance of water in Taiwan’s way of life, cultural traditions, and sustainable practices. Martello is creating paintings featuring revered sea deities such as, “Mazu, who according to legend, saved her fishermen family from an ocean storm by slipping into trance and plucking them to safety. Included in Martello’s images is the intersection with Kwan Yin, Green Tara, and the Virgin Mary – exploring an iconography that transcends religion for the sake of pure spiritual energy, inspiring us on a deeper level to feel our own truths. Martello’s drawings are hanging on a large oval chamber with a pool of water in the center, shaped in the from of Taiwan. The island becomes water and the space around it is pervaded by the tutelary presence of the deities. Water becomes the symbol through which everything flows, a form of purification – nourishment for earth, life, and regeneration. Michela Martello engages with humble materials such as interfacing and water pipes.
◢About the artist- Michela Martello
Martello’s humanistic and accessible works are characterized by her use of symbolism. She brings together the traditional and contemporary influences of a variety of technologies, media, themes, and cultures, to create art that achieves a universal language of aesthetics, merging centuries and crossing cultural bounds. Born in Grosseto, Italy, she studied illustration at the Instituto Europeo di Design, and published works in over 30 books. She moved to New York and shifted her focus to painting.
◢About the curator- Vida Sabbaghi
Cultural Producer Vida Sabbaghi studied art and design at Pratt Institute in NY. She is the founder and executive director of COPE NYC which partners with local, national, and international organizations to foster the intersection of ideas for creativity among diverse communities. This artist exchange program supports COPE's mission by fostering cross-cultural relationships through creative endeavors.
