(Fish and Sustainability Forever)

Yunn-jwu Liu has been engaged in creating and teaching papercut since 2007. Her works range from traditional papercutting subjects to themes full of her personal style like flora and fauna in nature. Recently, she has been paying close attention to plastic trash in the ocean and ecological preservation. Through the art of papercutting, Liu attempts to share stories and connect people with the world as well as to celebrate the beauty of harmonic coexistence of all beings in nature.

Through familiar totems and rituals in life, the project leads the visitors not only to learn from the wisdom of ancestors to respect nature and coexist with other creatures but also pray to God for bringing sustainability for future generations. Composed of a variety of artworks, including ‘fish(魚)’ in ancient Chinese characters, fish patterns on painted pottery, and the ‘Topknot Dolls (also known as Luck Catching Doll or Chicken Catching Doll)’, little red human figures as a symbol of guardian angels for lives and fertility in traditional papercutting. And now, each of us can be that topknot doll! Since the ocean and marine resources are essential to our survival, we shall be the ones to sustain and protect them so as survive and prosper.
