影像創作者,說故事的人。醉心於電影,電影也是創作的初心。從事廣告拍攝、編劇、紀錄片、MV等。曾任職遠見雜誌影音編輯、CNEX視納華仁紀錄片頻道資深節目頻道製作人等,目前為舞聲音樂藝術公司負責影像創作。

大部分的人都在同一座城市度過一生,一座城市也守著許多人的年華。而蕭壠園區前身曾是糖廠,走過時代歲月,糖廠已成為藝術村,就似一場夢,過去已消逝,留在記憶中,就如人生一樣,我們曾經存在,終將消逝。如同莊周夢蝶,分不清虛實,浮生若夢。

莊周夢蝶利用空間,以景物以人非邏輯的影像呈現夢境,半夢半醒,似夢非夢,已達到真實與夢境、人生如夢,夢如人生的意象。展場原有藝術家王怡婷所設置枯樹,探討死亡之後,人生生死並存,死後是夢醒亦或是另個夢的延續,莊周夢蝶將其保留,並在展區設置一水池呈現空間、影像鏡像並讓觀者能赤腳涉水,觀看自身。「千江有水千江月」,究竟天上月和水中月何者為真,希望透過水中倒影讓觀者思辨何者為真我、虛實。

《莊子‧齊物論》:「昔者莊周夢為蝴蝶,栩栩然蝴蝶也,自喻適志與!不知周也。俄然覺,則蘧蘧然周也。不知周之夢為蝴蝶與,蝴蝶之夢為周與?周與蝴蝶,則必有分矣。此之謂物化。」

這是莊子常為後人所樂道引用,富哲學思想的名篇。講述莊周有天夢見蝴蝶,逍遙自在,夢醒時發現自己還是莊周。因為夢太真實,分不清楚自己是莊周做夢化為蝴蝶,還是蝴蝶化為莊周。這是莊子認為人不能確切地區分真實和虛幻,就如同影像中的人事物如幻似真。而後人也藉此意象來表達人生如夢等等想法。

An image creator and storyteller, Chan is fascinated in film and it was his original intention in creation. Most people spent their lives in the same city. A city also holds the passing of years for people who lived there. Soulangh Cultural Park used to be a sugar refinery and as time goes by, the sugar refinery has become an art village. It is like a dream, the past has faded into memory. Same as life, we once exist in this world and eventually we all demise. Just as the ancient philosopher Zhuangzi dreamed he was a butterfly, the concept of ilusion and reality are always intertwined. Life is like a dream. 

The story of Zhuangzi Dreamed He was a Butterfly makes use of space and illogical scenery and presents a dream world. Between awakening and dreaming, it reveals the imagery that life is like a dream. The dead tree created previously by the artist Yi-ting Wang wishes to explore the life-death coexistence after death. The exhibition Zhuangzi Dreamed He Was a Butterfly maintains the tree and sets up a water pond to present the space. The water pond creates reflected imagery, allowing the audience to cross the water and observe his/her inner self. “A thousand streams with water flowing by reflect a thousand clones of the moon on high.” Which is the real moon, the one on the sky or the one upon the water? I wish the audience can contemplate the boundary between true and false through the reflection on the water.    

As written in Zhuangzi’s Discussion of the Equality of Things: “Once Zhuang Zhou dreamed he was a butterfly, a fluttering butterfly. What fun he had, doing as he pleased! He did not know he was Zhou. Suddenly he woke up and found himself to be Zhou. He did not know whether Zhou had dreamed he was a butterfly or a butterfly had dreamed he was Zhou. Between Zhou and the butterfly, there must be some distinction. This is what is meant by the transformation of things”.

This passage is frequently quoted from Zhuangzi’s works, which vividly demonstrates his philosophical thoughts. It shows that Zhuangzi thinks humans cannot specifically differentiate reality from illusion, just as we mistakenly think the objects in images are real. Later generations continue to adopt this imagery to represent the concept of life being a dream.
