The Jellyball Effect

Date
    2023-07-28 ~ 2023-10-01
Venue

A big ball of jelly is rolling through the landscape. As it rolls it consumes things in its path, building upon itself to change shape. It doesn’t judge or differentiate; it accumulates.

For Ariel Ruby, the Jellyball is an image of how varied events and elements have shaped the unique cultural landscape of Taiwan over time.

She accumulates objects similarly – liquid and solid, living and manufactured, new and discarded. Organic and synthetic materials are treated with the same regard and are not always distinguishable from one another.

This exhibition takes inspiration from a wide reaching view of storytelling, folk religion, ritual and tradition - as it collides and enmeshes with the contemporary world. The work questions once distinct polarities, do they even exist?

Using multimedia installation, this immersive and animated environment presents a collection of micro worlds that grow out of the darkness to seek light. Each world tells a story that may evoke similar emotions of sensuous experiences in “nature”, shining a light on an everyday magic that exists in this reality.

Ariel Maria Ruby Mather Palmese

Ariel Ruby is an Australian/Italian artist with deep connections to the places she has called home, and those that she can imagine. She makes lively, moving worlds filled with glittering items and images that explode with narrative and rich emotional memory. Ruby grapples with the state of our world by seeking to find sensuous experiences in all things, not favouring, yet not disregarding the man made materials that have become the “nature” of our time.
